Reigning Richard Elvins Medallist Peter Robertson all but lifted the Australian Cricket Society to an epic win in its opening round match against the Mornington Peninsula at Elsternwick Park on Sunday.

Having competed earlier in a 50km bike race from Frankston and back, ‘Robbo’ came on at first change and took three for 7 and  figured in one of two direct run outs as Mornington was restricted to 125 in its 40 overs.

In reply he topscored with a belligerent 39, from No 5, as the Society fell just nine runs short of a first-up win. Seventy-year-old evergreen Ian Hammet with 21 retired also batted beautifully. The match was played in hurricane winds, making bowling from the beach end hazardous.
